In Diablo 4, understanding gear rarity is the key to building a powerful character. The color of an item tells you exactly how many stats (affixes) it has and what kind of special powers it can hold.
Following major itemization updates, the roles of lower-tier and higher-tier gear have shifted significantly. Here is everything you need to know to sort your loot quickly and optimize your build.

Magic Items (Blue)
Stats: They roll with 1 to 2 basic affixes.
How to Use: These are only useful during the first few levels of your character. Once you start finding higher rarities, Magic items should be completely ignored or brought to the Blacksmith to be salvaged for basic crafting materials.
Rare Items (Yellow)
Stats: They roll with exactly 2 basic affixes.
How to Use: Rares serve as your primary transitional gear while leveling up and pushing into early difficulty tiers.
Important Mechanics: You can imprint a Legendary Aspect onto a Rare item at the Occultist. Doing this upgrades the item into a Legendary, but it will still keep its original 2 base affixes. Because native Legendary items drop with 3 affixes, an upgraded Rare will always have one less stat line than a natural Legendary. In the late game, Rares are strictly used for salvaging into Veiled Crystals.
Legendary Items (Orange)
Stats: They roll with 3 basic affixes plus 1 Legendary Aspect.
How to Use: This is the foundation of your endgame build. You will constantly hunt for Legendaries with ideal stat rolls for your skills.
The Codex of Power: When you find a Legendary item with a great special power but poor stats, salvage it at the Blacksmith. Doing so automatically saves and upgrades that Aspect in your Codex of Power. You can then imprint that max-rolled power onto your best gear infinitely.
Greater Affixes: In higher difficulties, Ancestral Legendaries have a chance to drop with "Greater Affixes." These stats are marked with a star and are 1.5 times more powerful than normal rolls.
Unique Items (Gold)
Stats: They feature 4 predetermined, fixed affixes and 1 highly specific Unique power.
How to Use: Uniques are rare drops that cannot have their stats rerolled, and their custom powers cannot be extracted or transferred. They are completely build-defining, often completely changing how a specific class skill behaves. Most top-tier endgame builds require at least one or two specific Unique Diablo 4 items to function at maximum efficiency.
Mythic Unique Items (Purple)
Stats: Formerly known as "Uber Uniques," these items always drop at maximum Item Power with 4 powerful fixed affixes and a massive generic Unique power.
How to Use: These are the rarest items in Sanctuary, typically farmed from endgame boss ladders. They offer unparalleled defense, resource management, or damage multipliers, and can fit into almost any character build. Whenever a Mythic Unique drops in the ancestral quality, it is guaranteed to have at least one Greater Affix.
